In addition, they are much greener than silicon-based solar cells and could be less expensive.

Dr. Orlin Velev, lead author of the study and Invista Professor of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering at NC State, created artificial leaves with the idea of using solar cells to imitate nature more closely.

Velev accomplished this by infusing water-based gel with light-sensitive molecules, and pairing it with electrodes coated by materials such as graphite or carbon nanotubes. The sun's rays then excite the light-sensitive molecules, creating electricity. This closely resembles nature because plant molecules get excited in order to synthesize sugars needed to grow.

Also, in order to draw in solar energy the way nature does, natural products like chlorophyll can be used in the artificial leaves to replace synthetic light-sensitive molecules to create the same reaction. The water-gel matrix in these new leaves allows for both natural products like chlorophyll and synthetic light-sensitive molecules to be used interchangeably......

New Energy Technologies Aims to Turn Windows Into Solar Panels A Maryland-based firm has developed a technology that it says can turn windows into solar panels. New Energy Technologies says that its new SolarWindow product can be directly sprayed on to windows at room temperature to turn them into solar energy generators.

Currently in the prototype stage, it has been demonstrated powering LED lights and the blades of a small model helicopter from the energy generated, say executives.

The product adheres to glass while keeping it transparent, according to the company, which says that it can generate electrical current and voltage from artificial light in addition to sunlight. Such nanotubes could form antennas that capture and focus light energy, potentially allowing much smaller and more powerful solar arrays.

"Instead of having your whole roof be a photovoltaic cell, you could have little spots that were tiny photovoltaic cells, with antennas that would drive photons into them," says Michael Strano, the Charles and Hilda Roddey Associate Professor of Chemical Engineering and leader of the research team. Read more

A Complete Guide to the Installation of Off-Grid PV Solar Power Systems

A Complete Guide to the Installation of Off-Grid PV Solar Power Systems by Bob Nagey. This DVD set is a 4 hour, 16 chapter comprehensive course on the installation of Off-Grid photovoltaic solar power electric systems. It is designed to take the complete beginner to full competency. The course is taught by Bob Nagy who is the teacher in over 40 videos on high-tech subjects. Bob's bio includes 20 years at the University of Texas, ABC TV, and NASA. His clear and friendly style bring the concepts across so that they are easily understandable. Every idea is demonstrated and shown in actual use. You will learn:

- How solar panels make electricity
- How to use a Multi-Tester
- Basic Electronics
- How to solder correctly
- Everything about Batteries
- Charge Controllers
- Inverters
- Panel mounting and fabrication
- Sun tracking
- System estimation
- Tax incentives
- System Maintenance

Bob will walk you through each decision you'll have to make when designing a system. You'll also examine several systems to see exactly how they were done. There is as well a bonus chapter on lowering your current energy use by 30%-40% so you can use a smaller solar system and save money.

This is equal to what you would get in a semester-long intensive solar power course at a university. That said, it is geared to the total beginner and if you can handle small tools, you can become an expert solar power installer. Invest a small amount so that you'll have one of the most in-demand skills in the coming years. Even if you are only installing your own small system, you will need to know what is in this video course.

You will see a lot of very colorful websites offering solar informational videos out there. Most are just quickly produced over-views of the subject. If you are committed to learning everything about how solar is really done, this is the course. It is a fully comprehensive series at a very low price. More information here - Order here.

Got Sun? Go Solar: Get Free Renewable Energy to Power Your Grid-Tied Home, by Rex A. Ewing and Doug Pratt. A straight-talking book tells grid-connected homeowners how to use free energy from the sun and wind to reduce or even eliminate their electric bills, and what to expect from this independent, thoughtful lifestyle. Whether you live in the sun-soaked Southwest, or windy North Dakota, alternative energy has come of age with affordable modern technology. Now with rebates and incentives from most states, installing a home system is an economically-attractive and environmentally-responsible option. Chapters include: - Why invest in alternative energy for your home? - Is it legal and safe? - How solar electricity really works - Batteries or not? - Sizing a system to fit your home and your needs - Got Wind? - What does it cost? - Does your state offer rebates or incentives? - Permits, Paperwork and Financing - The Nuts & Bolts: what to look for, what to avoid - Who does the installation? - Extensive appendix with resources, manufacturers, sizing worksheets, glossary, and more. The authors know firsthand how these systems work: Rex Ewing, author of "Power With Nature" and "Logs, Wind and Sun," has lived off-the-grid in the Colorado Rockies since 1999; and Doug Pratt, former technical editor of the "Solar Living Sourcebook," lives in a northern California grid-tied home and has been on the front lines of the renewable energy revolution since 1985. Order from Amazon.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://solarempower.blogspot.com/2010/08/got-sun-go-solar-get-free-renewable.html' title='Got Sun? The Portland Public Schools District is taking on an impressive renovation project this summer, one that will fix school rooftops and make the buildings more sustainable. Roofing crews are working fast in the hot summer sun, laying down solar panels on nine school rooftops by the time Fall arrives.

They're targeting old and rotten spots that need the work most and passersby won't be able to see the panels from the street since they lay flat like sheets of paper. The solar panels will make up about 18 percent of the schools' energy needs, resulting in a savings of around $1 million every year over the next two decade." Of course, today's solar panels do just that. With solar panels, all you have to do is mount them in a sunny place, hook up the wires, and you're in business. Because of high energy costs and a desire to lead a more "green" lifestyle, many homeowners are opting for solar and it is gaining in popularity by leaps and bounds. Here's why.

Solar water heating systems are hardly a new idea. Crude mechanisms were popular in sunny American states in as early as the year 1900. Solar panels somewhat similar to those used today were placed on home roofs of entire subdivisions in Florida from the 1920's to the 1940's. However, many Americans thought these early panels were obtrusive and detracted from a home's look, and the practice fell into public disfavor for a few decades.

In the 1970's, the skyrocketing costs of home heating oil led President Jimmy Carter to offer tax breaks to those who wished to tap into solar power again. The new solar panels were better able to concentrate the heat generated by the sun and used it much more efficiently. Today's solar panels are more efficient than ever and are smaller and thinner than their older counterparts, and they are enjoying a resurgence in popularity all across America and especially in states where the sun is strongest.

The panels trap the energy from the sun and heat water that is naturally circulated into and through a collector. The heated water is stored in a heavily insulated tank that is similar to conventional hot water tanks, and it is kept there until it is needed. In order to help heat a home as well as water, some systems can be incorporated into radiant floor heating pipes. The water heated by the sun is allowed to circulate throughout the floor of a home, heating it naturally and efficiently at a much lower cost.

Although installation costs for solar power systems are relatively high, they pay for themselves over time and never need to be replaced or maintained. They must be properly installed to work right, and the panels demand a south-facing position where they can receive the sun's rays during the majority of daylight hours. Such systems are rapidly become the alternative heating method of choice for environmentally conscious homeowners who want to keep heating bills down while helping the planet too.

GlobalSolarCenter.com specializes in providing a clean energy future and everything you need to know about solar costs and potential savings. The coming energy crisis caused by a peak in global oil and natural gas production will profoundly affect the lives of all North Americans. As the price of these vital fuels rises, homeowners will scramble to cut their fuel bills. Two options for meeting the upcoming challenge are dramatic improvements in home energy efficiency and efforts to tap into clean, affordable, renewable energy resources to heat and cool homes, to provide hot water and electricity, and even to cook. These measures can result in huge savings and a level of energy independence. The Homeowner's Guide to Renewable Energy tells you how. It starts by outlining the likely impacts of fossil fuel shortages and some basic facts about energy. It then discusses energy conservation to slash energy bills and prepare for renewable energy options. Focusing carefully on specific strategies needed to replace specific fuels, the book then examines each practical energy option available to homeowners. The Homeowner's Guide to Renewable Energy gives readers sufficient knowledge to hire and communicate effectively with contractors and, for those wanting do installations themselves, it recommends more detailed manuals. With a complete resource listing, this well-illustrated and accessible guide is a perfect companion for illuminating the coming dark age. Heating water with the sun is almost as old as humankind itself, and it is done all over the world. Yet there are strangely few resources on the topic in North America. Solar Water Heating fills this gap. It reviews the history of solar water and space heating systems from prehistory to the present, then presents the basics of solar water heating, including an introduction to modern solar energy systems, energy conservation and energy economics. Drawing on the author's experience as an installer of these systems, the book goes on to cover:

Types of solar collectors, solar water and space heating systems and solar pool heating systems, including their advantages and disadvantages

System components, their installation, operation, and maintenance

System sizing and siting

Choosing the appropriate system

Since people often get turned off by the up-front cost, the book focuses especially on the financial aspects of solar water or space heating systems, clearly showing that such systems can save significant costs in the long run. Well-illustrated, the book is designed for a wide readership from the curious to the student or professional. Bob Ramlow is the solar thermal consultant for the Wisconsin Focus on Energy Program. The owner of a renewable energy company, he has over 30 years experience with solar energy systems. A founder and director of the Midwest Renewable Energy Association (MREA) he has authored a training manual on solar water & space heating. Benjamin Nusz currently works as a solar water heating consultant and site assessor in Wisconsin.Order from Amazon.

Third Generation Photovoltaics: Advanced Solar Energy Conversion

Book Review

Third Generation Photovoltaics: Advanced Solar Energy Conversion, by M. A. Green. Photovoltaics, the direct conversion of sunlight to electricity, is now the fastest growing technology for electricity generation. Present "first generation" products use the same silicon wafers as in microelectronics. "Second generation" thin-films, now entering the market, have the potential to greatly improve the economics by eliminating material costs. Martin Green, one of the world’s foremost photovoltaic researchers, argues in this book that "second generation" photovoltaics will eventually reach its own material cost constraints, engendering a "third generation" of high performance thin-films. The book explores, self-consistently, the energy conversion potential of advanced approaches for improving photovoltaic performance and outlines possible implementation paths. Order from Amazon.

Solar Energy: Principles of Thermal Collection and Storage

Book Review

Solar Energy: Principles of Thermal Collection and Storage, 3e, by S. The global economy and our way of life are based on the exploitation of fossil fuels, which not only threaten massive environmental and social disruption through global warming but, at present rates of consumption, will run out within decades, causing huge industrial dislocation and economic collapse. Even before then, the conflicts it causes in the Middle East and elsewhere will be frighteningly exacerbated. The alternate exists: renewable energy from renewable sources – above all, solar. Substituting renewable for fossil resources will take a new industrial revolution to avert the worst of the damage and establish a new international order. It can be done, and it can be done in time. The Solar Economy, by one of the world’s most effective analysts and advocates, lays out the blueprints, showing how the political, economic and technological challenges can be met using indigenous, renewable and universally available resources, and the enormous opportunities and benefits that will flow from doing so. Order from Amazon.

Renewable Energy Made Easy

Book Review

Renewable Energy Made Easy: Free Energy from Solar, Wind, Hydropower, and Other Alternative Energy Sources, by David Craddock. Studies have shown that the average North American family will spend more than a quarter of a million dollars on energy in a lifetime. What many other countries, including Germany, Spain, France, Denmark, China, Brazil, and even Iceland, have realized is that there is a better way to power our homes, businesses, and cars by using renewable energy sources. Recently, the United States has begun to understand the importance of reducing its reliance on coal, natural gas, nuclear power, and hydropower plants, which comprise the majority of the nation s electricity, due to increasing oil prices. Some sections of the country, including California, are turning to renewable energy sources. In fact, 12 percent of California s electricity is produced by renewable resources. The potential for the use of renewables is very large and understanding their use and their impact is key. Renewable Energy Made Easy will provide you with everything you need to know about these alternative energy sources. You will learn about solar power, wind power, water power, biofuels, geothermal energy, ethanol, wave farms, photovoltaic power plants, and hydrogen fuels. You will also become well-versed on the availability, aesthetics, environmental and social considerations, and longevity issues of these so-called soft energy technologies. In addition, you will learn about the current costs and the projected costs in the future, ENERGY STAR® regulations, the newest research and innovations, and the high development potential of renewable energy. This book will serve as a guide to creating more efficient buildings and an invaluable resource for how to change our preconceived notions about power. This book has taken the complexity and scientific terms out of this topic, making it jargon-free and easy to understand. Ultimately, you will learn how our country can improve energy efficiency, reduce oil dependence, improve energy security, and reduce the health and environmental impact of our current energy system. Order from Amazon.

The Complete Idiot's Guide to Solar Power For Your Home

Book Review

The Complete Idiot's Guide to Solar Power For Your Home (2nd Edition), by Dan Ramsey and David Hughes.
